ENTERTAINMENT Stranger Jersey: Devil's Tower in Alpine Jessica Presinzano NorthJersey Oct. 27, 2017Updated Oct. 29, 2018, 10:50 a.m. ET Don't walk or drive backwards around this tower, legends warn. If you do, you may come face-to-face with a ghost, or even the Devil. The legend of Devil's Tower is one of love scorned. The tower which stands around large houses in Alpine's Rio Vista neighborhood was constructed in the early 1900s by Charles Rollinson Lamb for Manuel Rionda, a sugar baron. The tower was joined by an underground tunnel to their home and designed for Rionda's wife Harriet, so she could see the New York City skyline from their home.
